The "Portraits of Physicians" collection features more than 800 images of physicians from the librarian's vertical file. It includes portraits of people distinguished in medicine, historical figures important to the medical sciences as well as photographs of doctors and medical researchers associated with the University of Pittsburgh or local hospitals. The conspicuous absence of images of black physicians is not caused by our unwillingness to share them. We do not have any. It is a historical collection, assembled before our institution committed itself to diversity and it reflects the times it was gathered. It shines the light on our past, not the presence.
