About the Book

Falk Library’s set of three physical volumes comprises all seven “classis.” It is bound in elaborately decorated, blind-tooled 16th-century pigskin binding. Gilded elements and a spine label were added in the 18th century. It includes numerous woodcuts, head-pieces (decorations at the beginning of each chapter), and initials.

It has many handwritten annotations, including marks and signatures of previous owners. Annotations are mostly in Latin, which is a strong indication they must have been written early when Latin was still the language of science. There are no later notes except the dated signature “gosch 1853."

It would be fascinating to be able to reconstruct the full provenance. Unfortunately, only parts of the voyage from Basel to Pittsburgh can be traced with certainty.
