- Freedom House Ambulance: The FIRST Responders (30 minutes)
This WQED documentary on the rise and fall of Freedom House Ambulance first aired in January 2023. It is full of historical photographs and video clips interlaced with the voices and views of the surviving paramedics from the original group. WQED offers additional information and educational resources (video clips, photographs, slides, educator’s guide) to help teachers introduce and discuss with students this documentary and the story it tells.
On March 2, 2024, the School of Public Health organized a panel discussion with Freedom House Ambulance paramedic John Moon; Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services Chief Amera Gilchrist; and Pitt faculty who direct related programs, including Dr. Sylvia Owusu-Ansah, Director of Emergency Medicine at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh; Dr. Rikki Tripp, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and co-founder of Akoma United which teaches life-saving skills; and Antonio Gumucio, a Master of Public Health student working with the Center for Cardiac Arrest Survival.
